Pre-Hurricane Exterior Prep: What Bradenton Beach & Sarasota Owners Should Clean First

Hurricane season runs June through November on Florida's Gulf Coast, and homeowners across Bradenton, Sarasota, Bradenton Beach, Anna Maria Island, Holmes Beach, Siesta Key, and Longboat Key are smart to think about pre-storm exterior cleaning as part of their preparation. A clean roof and clean gutters drain better, clean screens flex better in wind without trapping debris, and clean exterior surfaces are far easier to inspect for damage after a storm. Here's the priority list.

Priority #1: Roof Soft Washing

A roof with embedded algae, lichen, and Gloeocapsa magma is a roof with compromised drainage. Algae mats hold moisture, accelerate granule loss, and obscure existing damage you'd otherwise spot during a pre-season inspection. Schedule roof soft washing in April or early May so the roof is clean, dry, and inspectable before the first named storm forms.

Priority #2: Gutter and Downspout Clearing

Clogged gutters in a hurricane mean water back-up under your eaves, around windows, and into your fascia. We clear and flush gutters as part of every roof cleaning visit, and we recommend a dedicated gutter clearing for any home with significant tree canopy in Palmer Ranch, The Meadows, Heritage Harbour, Tara, Sanctuary Cove, or any heavily wooded community.

Priority #3: Screen Cage Inspection and Soft Wash

A clean, well-rinsed screen cage flexes properly in wind. A cage caked with mildew, salt film, and debris is heavier, more brittle, and more likely to tear at fastener points. Soft wash the cage in May, and have the technician note any frame corrosion, loose screws, or compromised fasteners while they're up there.

Priority #4: Drain and Walkway Clearing

Pool deck drains, French drains, yard drains — all need to be flowing freely before a storm. Surface clean walkways, driveways, and pool decks in May to clear leaf litter and debris from drain grates and ensure water moves where it's supposed to.

Priority #5: Pre-Storm Documentation
