BBQ grease, sunscreen drips, oil, rust, and red clay all stain driveways harder in summer heat. Here's how to remove the worst summer stains from concrete and paver driveways across Bradenton, Palmetto, and Ellenton — and how to prevent them.

Summer is hard on driveways. The combination of constant heat, frequent use, and short bursts of intense rain creates the perfect environment for the four worst driveway stains we deal with across Bradenton, Palmetto, and Ellenton:

1. Oil & transmission fluid from cars sitting in the driveway in 95° heat 2. BBQ grease from grills rolled onto the driveway for parties 3. Sunscreen and tanning oil drips around pool access paths 4. Red clay & iron runoff from sprinklers and landscaping

Each one requires a different cleaning approach. Generic "pressure wash the driveway" treatment doesn't touch any of them.

Oil Stains

Oil that's been sitting on concrete for more than 24 hours has already penetrated the surface — surface pressure washing alone won't pull it out. The correct treatment is a degreaser pre-soak, agitation with a stiff brush, dwell time to draw the oil to the surface, and then a high-pressure rinse. For older, deeper stains we sometimes need two treatments a few days apart. On paver driveways, we always test in an inconspicuous area first to confirm the degreaser doesn't affect color.

BBQ Grease

Grill grease is animal fat — it bonds with concrete differently than petroleum oil. A hot-water rinse plus a fat-targeting alkaline cleaner is the right approach. Standard pressure washing actually smears grease deeper into the pores rather than lifting it.

Sunscreen & Tanning Oil

These are the sleeper stains nobody warns you about. They create yellow-tinted footprint patterns from the pool entrance back to the driveway. The fix is a surfactant-rich soft wash treatment — never just pressure washing, which spreads the oil across more area.

Rust & Red Clay

Sprinklers running on well water deposit iron that turns concrete and pavers orange. The fix is a phosphoric-acid-based rust remover (the same family used on concrete construction sites), applied carefully and rinsed thoroughly. Using the wrong rust remover etches the surface — this is one place you really want a professional rather than a hardware-store fix.

The Surface Cleaner Pass Comes Last

After targeted stain treatment, we run a commercial surface cleaner across the entire driveway for an even, streak-free finish. This is what separates a true professional driveway cleaning from someone with a wand — wands leave zebra stripes, surface cleaners deliver a uniform clean across the whole slab.

Prevention: What to Do After

Once the driveway is clean, you have two prevention options:

- Concrete sealer — for concrete driveways, a penetrating concrete sealer dramatically reduces oil absorption and stain depth - Paver sealer — for pavers, our standard premium water-based seal blocks oil, sunscreen, and grease from penetrating the stone

Both significantly reduce how often you need stain removal service.
