Pool Deck Summer Prep on Longboat Key, Siesta Key & Anna Maria Island

If you own a home on Longboat Key, Siesta Key, Anna Maria Island, Holmes Beach, or Bradenton Beach, your pool deck takes more abuse than any other surface on the property. Salt air constantly settles on the surface, the saltwater pool sends chlorinated splash-out across the pavers all day, the sun bakes them to 130°F, and afternoon summer storms drop an inch of rain in twenty minutes — then evaporate it back into the deck. Without proper summer prep, even a high-end travertine or premium paver deck can look ten years old in three.

The Three Things Killing Your Barrier Island Pool Deck

1. Salt mist — even pools that aren't saltwater accumulate Gulf salt deposits that crystallize in paver pores and accelerate surface pitting. 2. Pool chemistry splash-out — chlorine and pH adjusters slowly bleach surrounding pavers, especially darker colors. 3. Algae in low-drainage areas — every pool deck has spots where water pools after rain. Those spots grow green and black algae faster than anywhere else.

Step One: Deep Clean Before Any Sealing

Before you can seal or even properly evaluate a coastal pool deck, it needs a true deep clean — surface cleaner on pavers, soft wash chemistry on travertine and shellstone, and hand work on coping and step edges. We use a method matched to the material so we never etch travertine or strip color from premium pavers.

Step Two: Replace Joint Sand

This is the step most homeowners (and most cheap contractors) skip. Polymeric sand in pool deck joints wears down faster than driveway joints because of constant water exposure. Without fresh sand, pavers begin to shift, weeds appear, and ants colonize the joints. Resanding is a 1-day job that buys years of life.

Step Three: Seal With Coastal-Grade Sealer

Coastal pool decks need a sealer that handles chlorine, salt, and constant moisture — not the standard driveway sealer some contractors apply universally. We use premium water-based sealers engineered for coastal pool deck conditions, applied in two coats with proper dry time between. A correct coastal seal lasts 2.5–3 years before needing a refresh (a bit shorter than driveway life because pool decks see far more chemical exposure).

Travertine vs. Pavers — Different Strategies

Travertine pool decks (very popular on Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island) need a breathable, penetrating sealer that protects without trapping moisture. Concrete or clay pavers (popular on Siesta Key) can take a stronger film-forming sealer with optional wet-look enhancement. Using the wrong product on either is the most common reason coastal decks fail prematurely.

Don't Forget the Pool Cage

Most barrier island homes have either a pool cage or a fully open deck. If you have a cage, summer is when the salt mist accumulates worst on the inside surface of the frame. An annual soft wash + fresh-water rinse on the cage extends frame life significantly — especially on saltwater pools.
